Critical Memory Integration (CMI) is a trauma-focused therapy approach designed to help clients identify, process, and integrate unresolved traumatic memories that continue to influence present-day emotions, behaviors, and relationship patterns.
CMI is based on the understanding that when trauma occurs—especially in childhood—the brain may store memories in a fragmented or “state-dependent” way. Instead of being integrated into a coherent life narrative, these memories can remain emotionally charged and easily triggered. This can show up as:
-
Anxiety or panic that feels out of proportion
-
Emotional reactivity
-
Relationship struggles
-
Shame or negative self-beliefs
-
Feeling “stuck” in certain patterns
Unlike talk therapy that focuses mainly on insight, CMI works at both the emotional and neurological levels to reduce trauma symptoms and improve emotional regulation.
CMI is often used to treat:
-
PTSD and complex trauma
-
Anxiety and depression
-
Attachment wounds
-
Grief and loss
-
Relational trauma
-
Chronic shame
