Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)
What Is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)?
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based therapy approach that helps individuals develop psychological flexibility—the ability to stay present, open, and engaged in life even when thoughts or emotions are difficult.
Rather than trying to eliminate anxiety, sadness, or intrusive thoughts, ACT teaches you how to:
Accept internal experiences without being controlled by them
Step back from unhelpful thoughts (cognitive defusion)
Clarify your core values
Take meaningful action aligned with those values
ACT is based on the idea that struggling to control or suppress painful emotions often makes them stronger. Instead, ACT helps you build a different relationship with your inner world so you can move forward in your life—even when discomfort is present.
ACT Is Commonly Used For:
Anxiety disorders
Depression
OCD
Trauma and PTSD
Chronic stress
Faith transitions or identity shifts
Relationship challenges
"I've experienced therapy with 5 different therapists over the past decade. They each taught me some things, but never created palpable breakthroughs. Spencer is an incredible active listener, asks powerful questions, and noticed things in our very first session that others never caught in months, or even years, of interaction. Spencer has helped create substantial movement in just a few sessions, in a couple of areas of my life that I've been stuck for a long time. I could not imagine giving a higher recommendation for anyone!"
"I was very hesitant to start my therapy journey but I am so thankful that I did. And I am even more grateful that it was with Spencer! He is an attentive listener, genuine, down to earth, easy to talk to, all-around great individual and professional whom I would trust to work with even my closest friends and family. I think it's safe for me to say that I am a much better person because of my time working with Spencer. Highly, highly recommend!"
"Spencer at Congruence Therapy has been exactly what I needed. The guy is an incredible therapist and goes about helping his clients in a direct but also very laid back fashion, and has really allowed me to discover my own direction and solutions to the things I’m working on. He’s also very experienced and has really honed his skills and craft, while not becoming formulaic at all in his approach. I’m a working professional and I think Spencer fits my demographic really well - he specializes in life transitions, self awareness, and self esteem, but frankly I think he would be great for just about anything.
Since starting therapy with him, I’ve recommended him to so many of my friends. When people ask how’s life or what’s new, I often bring up how great my therapist is haha, because he has really made a positive impact on me.
Definitely worth the money twice over, 10/10 would recommend."
