Recreational therapy in mental health is a structured, evidence-based process using active, leisure-based interventions—such as art, music, sports, and community outings—to treat and rehabilitate individuals with mental illnesses or emotional challenges.
The five domains of recreation therapy, used to promote holistic well-being, are Physical, Cognitive, Emotional, Social, and Spiritual, with therapists using purposeful leisure activities to help individuals improve skills, manage emotions, build connections, and achieve a better quality of life across these areas.
